Represented Norwalk in the State Legistature in 1800-1-2-3-4- 9-10. He was for many years Postmaster and Judge of Probate of Nor- walk, "a most worthy and excellent man." He d. Feb. 3, 1832.

Until comparatively recently, Rev. John Maltby was thought to have died unmarried. He had at least four children.
Elizabeth mar. Dr. W. Smith Stevens of Charlestown, S.C. They had at least on dau., as in 1809, he with his dau. Susan Eliza Stevens, sold their portion of the Estate to Stow Wood of Bermuda, W. I. Purchase price # 234. The "Estate" was evidently that of Elizabeth's parents. Stow Wood of Bermuda, mar. Margaret Maltby, sister of Elizabeth, the latter was probably dead in 1809, as the dau. is selling with her father.
"The South Carolina Gazette" has a notice of Elizabeth's marriage.
"Last Thursday evening Dr. William Smith Stevens, of this city, was married to Miss Elizabeth Maltby, daughter of the Rev. Mr. Maltby, deceased, of Bermuda." (Monday, Dec. 27, 1784).
"Maltby came to South Carolina in 1770, hence I infer his child- ren were born at Bermuda."
