Child of Ruth Buckley and David Beach: VI.1164. John Henry Beach, b. Jan. ?, 1839.
He wrote the compiler: "When I was a lad I often heard my mother sing an old ballad: 'The Dying British Officer.' It began: 'Come all ye heroes, who'eer you be,
Who walk by land or sail by sea.' I know the homely tune now, and I knew every word of the song, then."
In 1916, Mr. John H. Beach, Stratfield Hotel, Bridgeport, Conn. wrote: "My mother, Ruth Bulkeley, always spoke of her great-grand- father as 'Major Maltbie' and usually in connection with the French and Indian War. I never heard his Christian name." She made a "knotted bedspread," now in possession of a descendant.
Note. Here is a case of accurate tradition as his mother's great-grandfather was Major Jonathan (2) Maltbie.
