Jonathan Maltby Data

Jonathan Maltby Buys Land, 1786 (called Yeoman) Daniel Weller of Pittsfield in the County of Berkshire, Mass., to Jonathan Maltby of Lenox, Mass., 128 acres of land in the town of Pittsfield, adjoining the township border. Consideration 300 pounds. Executed March 23, 1786. Recorded April 4, 1787. (From a certified photostatic copy of Book 4, page 293, in Middle District Registry, Pittsfield.) Maltby is the only spelling given in this deed.

Jonathan Maltby Sells Land, 1787 (called Yeoman) Jonathan Maltby of Pittsfield in the County of Berkshire, Mass., to Isaac Wood of Lenox, Berkshire Co., Mass. The description of the land is identical with that bought by Jonathan Maltby from Daniel Weller. Consideration 300 pounds. Executed April 3, 1787. Recorded April 4, 1787. (From a certified photostatic copy of Book 22, page 448 in Middle District Registry, Pittsfield.) Maltby is the only spelling given for this deed.

The statement by the Town Clerk of the Town of Vershire, Vt., seems to prove that the two land transactions recorded April 4, 1787 (just above cited) were not made by Jonathan, 1746. There were at the time four Jonathan Maltbys of the fourth generation in America. One of them was Rev. Jonathan_4_ Maltby of Branford and New Haven, and another was Capt. Jonathan_4_ Maltbie, whose records are well known and published in the D.A.R. Ancestry. It is doubtful whether either of these could have been a resident of either Lenox or Pittsfield at any time. Jonathan, 1751, was the only known Jonathan who might have made these transactions.
