Van Buren VIR Onondaga County, New York. "No. 18, April 17, 1887, Harriet Rouse, aged 63-5-6, married, white, born Van Buren, N.Y., daughter of Chester Molby, born Salem, Mass. and Sarah Molby (b.p. not given) died Van Buren, apoplexy. Buried Baldwinsville." Found under "Deaths."

Compiler's note on birthplace of Chester. Mrs. Daboll of Memphis in reporting vital statistics for her mother, Loanna Meigs, gave the birthplace of Chester as Salem, N.Y. Elsewhere I discuss the discrepancy. Strangely, at least a half dozen Molbys have given Salem, Mass., among them Miner Maltby, and Samuel Hugh Maltby, grandsons of Jonathan. To me it is evident they knew Jonathan lived in Massachusetts and that he came from Salem (but it was not Salem, Mass.). Chester was born at a time after land sale at Pittsfield, (or Lenox) Mass., and before the purchase of land in Hebrontown, P.O. Salem, N.Y., by his father, Jonathan. Horace Haynes Maltby, son of William Maltby 1800, wrote that Samuel Molby 1815, son of Chester, told that he had seen, in Jacob Maltby's possession, the original deed to Jonathan and that his name was Maltby in the deed, referring to Onondaga County.
