Jacob Maltby was a farmer. He came to Van Buren about 1803 as a young man, probably with his parents. At that time their location was in the town of Camillus as the town of Van Buren was not set off until March 26, 1829.

After Jacob's death his widow married John Bowman, an early settler in Van Buren, whose first wife, Matilda Miner, was a sister of his second wife. The Bowmans lived on the Hardscrabble road out of Baldwinsville. This road is now called the Van Buren road. Their house burned to the ground on Wednesday night, Oct. 21, 1868. This was undoubtedly when the Maltby Bible and other of Sally's treasures were burned.

John Bowman and his first wife are buried in the Belle Isle cemetery in the town of Camillus, while the final resting place of Jacob and Sally Maltby is in the Riverview cemetery in Baldwinsville, N.Y.*
