Pardon Hart was a farmer. According to the 1855 Van Buren census, he and his wife had been here 50 years, which would have made them residents since about 1805. He was not, however, reported as head of a household until the 1820 census, which would indicate that they were married here in the township and that their children were born here.
His first purchase of land was on June 19, 1815, when he bought a 50 acre tract of land in the town of Camillus, now Van Buren, in Lot 19, for $325. After that he bought a small acreage in Lot 20 and another in Lot 25. It would appear that the farm he lived on was the one of 25 acres in Lot 20, as that was the last property sold. He gave a deed to this land to Rufus and James Sears on Sept. 15, 1855, and received $1,700 for it. After that the family must have moved away as there is no further record of them in this locality.
If Pardon Hart came here as early as 1805, he probably came with his parents as he would be only about 13 years old in that year. There was an Eber Hart who was in Camillus before 1810, and lived in Van Buren apparently the rest of his life. He was born about 1753 and died July 21, 1842, and is buried in Sorrell Hill cemetery here in Van Buren. He married Dec. 20, 1778, Alice Deval. "Rhode Island Vital Records, 1636-1850. Unver Tiverton. Eber Hart (Sr.), of William of Tiverton, and Alice Deval, of William, deceased of Dartmouth, married by Walter Cook Justice, Dec. 20, 1778." I have been able only to get the name of one of his children, as he died before good records were available and without making a will. His son was Eber Hart, Jr., 1787-1873. Mr. Louis Sears told me that Eber Hart (Jr.) married a Howe. All of these dates would make it seem possible that Pardon was a son of Eber, Sr.
