Samuel Molby was a farmer and merchant. During his early and middle life he lived on the East Dead Creek road - first on his father's farm where he was born, and later on his own farm which was diagonally across the road from his father's place. All of his children were born here. On Sept. 7, 1852, he sold his farm to Lyman Maltby, and about this time moved to a small farm on Tappan street, just outside the corporate limits of Baldwinsville, and opened a grocery store in a building called the "Pig's Ear" on the south, or Van Buren side of the river, and facing what is now the Barge Canal locks.

Heavy snows of 1957-58 crushed the "Pig's Ear." It is no more. I have a Syracuse Post Standard picture and a snapshot of it, as I saw it many years ago.

Sources: Records by Samuel, by Samuel James, in Samuel's Bible, and in Chester's Bible, personal visits and inquiry, and work by L.E. Voorhees.
