MALTBY GENEALOGY, PREFACE

The first 744 pages of the Maltby Genealogy -- American Lineage, were compiled by Dorothy Lord Maltby (Mrs. Clarence Sidney) Verrill (see #3428 herein, pages 632-3).

Mrs. Verrill was active in genealogical research from 1891 to her death in 1957, her initials DMV appearing frequently on the genealogical pages of the Boston Evening Transcript and later, The Hartford Times. In 1916 she published the now superseded Maltby -- Maltbie History. Her last published article appeared posthumously in the October 1957 and January 1958 issues of the New England Historical and Genealogical Register. It consists of 17 pages devoted to the third and fourth generations of Maltbys in Amnerica and should be read in conjunction with this book.

I first learned of the death of Mrs. Verrill in 1958 when my letter to her was returned noted "Deceased." I wrote to her daughter, Rae Maltby Verrill (Mrs. Ralph Gordon) McDiarmid of West Vancouver, B.C. (see #4470, page 710) and suggested that her mother's extensive genealogical collection be donated to the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, which was finally accomplished in 1963.

In 1960 Mrs. McDiarmid informed me that the handwritten ms. her mother had compiled on the Maltby family had been sent to Prof. Fred A. Molby of Baldwin City, Kansas (see #3616, page 660) who had offered to have it type-written at his expense, and to compile an index. He expressed dismay to Mrs. McDiarmid over the high cost of producing the genealogy in printed form. I wrote to him, suggesting that the type written copy be sent to the Godfrey Memorial Library, Middletown, Connecticut, to be reproduced by the Microcard process, at no cost to him. In 1964 I again wrote to Prof. Molby, repeating the Microcard suggestion. He replied that my letter had revived his interest in completing the index to Mrs. Verrill's book.

His letter to me of 8 December 1967 requested me to arrange with Godfrey Memorial Library for the Microcarding. The typing of Mrs. Verrill's ms., its indexing, and Prof. Molby's own 97-page compilation with separate index on Jonathan 4 Maltby and his descendants (Prof. Molby being one) had been completed. I received the typescript from Prof. Molby's attorney in February 1968 with the lamentable news that Prof. Molby had died on 24 January 1968, having attained the age of 90 on the 5th of that month.

It is unfortunate that Prof. Molby did not survive to see the publication of this monumental work, but a source of satisfaction to me to know that the product of more than 60 years of devoted research by Mrs. Verrill is being preserved for posterity.

Considerable portions of Prof. Molby's 97-page compilation duplicate data appearing in Mrs. Verrill's 744 pages, but sufficient additional data are given to justify the inclusion of his work with that of Mrs. Verrill. The smaller compilation has been treated herein as a Supplement, each of its page numbers having the letter "S" prefixed.

My own contribution to the production of this book is limited to making such changes and notations as were required to consolidate three separate compilations and indexs into a unified whole. I wish to give notice that I have no information on or interest in the Maltby family as such. Please do not direct inquiries to me.
