American Lineage

III.11. Nathaniel Maltby, b. Dec. 29, 1700 (John 2, Wm. 1). He mar.Deborah Jones, Dec. 4, 1723. (Hew Haven Rec.) They were married by Samuel Bishop, Justice of the Peace. Deborah was b. Dec. 19, 1700. He was of Saybrook, Conn. and died there in 1731. (Mrs. Cushman gives this date as "1733").

(Conn. Mar., Vol. II, p. 114) gives the marriage of John's widow, Deborah: "John Tammage and Deborah Maltbie, mar. Oct. 21, 1735." Elsewhere he is called "Captain." He was living in 1743.

Probabley Capt. John Tammage (Talmage) descended from John Talmage who d. 1691, 1st husband of Abigail Bishop, who mar. William Maltby. "Solomon Talmage who was with Jonathan Maltby, b. 1751, at the surrender of General Burgoyne in 1777," was, supposedly, of this family.

Administration was granted on Nathaneil Maltby of Saybrook, to his widow Deborah. HIs inventory states he had ten acres of land lying South upon Jan Nicols and that he bought part of his homestead from his mother, brother John and sister Hannah. The inventory of his estate is in Guilford Probate Rec. presented May 24, 1733. "He died before Oct." (1732 ?) His wife Deborah administered his estate valued at #217-12 shillings.

"Connecticut Genealogies, Vol. I, p. 219," gives the ancestry of Deborah Jones, as follows:

1. Governor Theophilus Eaton, b. in Stony, Stratford, Buckinghamshire,
England, in 1590, was a son of Reverend Richard Eaton. Theophilus
Eaton married (1) Grace Miller, Dec. 3, 1622; she died February,
1626. He married (2) Anna Yale, widow of David Yale, in 1627. With
Davenport, he was a founder of the Colony of New Haven, 1638; he
was the first governor of the New Haven Colony, serving until his
    death on January 7, 1657.
2. Hannah, daughter of Theophilus and Ann (----) Yale Eaton, was
baptised Oct. 6, 1632; she married Deputy Governor, William Jones,
    b. 1624. They were married July 4, 1659. She died May 4, 1707.
3. Isaac Jones, b. June 21, 1671, was a son of Deputy Governor William
and Hannah (Eaton) Jones. He married Deborah Clark, b. Oct. 24,
1672. Deborah Clark was daughter of James (2) Clark and Deborah
    (Peacock) Clark.
4. Deborah Jones, b. Sept. 24, 1700, was daughter of Isaac Jones and
Deborah (Clark) Jones. The daughter, Deborah Jones, married
    Nathaniel Maltby, Dec. 4, 1723.

A note received states: "John Talmage died 4 Sept. 1751, ae. 50." (New Haven Tombstone Inscription). She mar. (3) Timothy Bronson of Kensington (in Berlin). from D. L. Jacobus.

Child of Nathaniel and Deborah (Jones) Maltby.

IV.50. Elizabeth Maltby, b. Sept. 4, 1724, at Saybrook, Connecticut.

III.12. William Maltby, b. July 6, 1703, Saybrook (John 2, Wm. 1).He is believed to have died unmarried as he is not mentioned in his father's will of March 11, 1727. I think this should be proof that he was not living in 1727. However, there is a Philadelphia, Penn. Record of the marriage Nov. 12, 1728, of William Maultbey and Dorothy Stegleigh." (Possibly he was a descendant of the emigrant brother, Robert Maltby).

III.13. Hannah Maltby, b. Sept. 18, 1704, at Saybrook (John 2, Wm. 1). Mar. in Guilford, Conn., Jan. 17, 1730, Abraham Hodgkin (Ref. N.E.H.G. Reg., Vol. 58, p. 281). She d. Dec. 1, 1779 and he d. Mar. 6, 1770. (Gen. Reg. 1904, p. 281).
