Generation
In 1725 John Maltby was of Middletown, Conn. His father in his will 1710, left his eldest son John (2) 'about 100 acres lying between the bounds of Wallingford and Middletown." By 1747, John Maltby was of Killingworth. In 1753, he was of Wallingford. A Wallingford Deed, 1763, shows that John Maltby mentions his "Son-in-law, Jonathan Osborne." The records of this John Maltby are confusing. Dr. Charles Benjamin Maltbie wrote of him: "He had five daughters and no sons." I think this is an error and that he had two sons, who probably never married. John Maltby, b. 1698, was of Wallingford, Conn., in 1763. I think the following was his son: (New York Hist. and Biog. Reg.) "John Maltby of Wallingford, enlisted, April 19, 1759, in New York Provincial Troops, aged 28." This would give his birth date as 1731. Someone sent the following: "John Maltby's will was probated in Guilford, Conn. 1760." This I believe is the son John. Another contributor wrote: "John Maltby's estate was settled by his brother-in-law, Jonathan Osborn, who settled at New Haven." As John, b. 1698 had a dau. Mehitabel who mar. Jonathan Osborn this would seem to apply to John, b. 1731. I think the birth date "1731" or "about 1731" is in the Talcott MS., New Haven Hist. Society, under "Guilford Record." The following I place as John, Senior. "1761. John Maltby of Wallingford mar. widow Jane Smith of Killingworth, Widow of David Smith of Saybrook; his will probated at Guilford, Conn. 1760." In 1772. John and Jane Maltby deed land, calling themselves of Guilford. (As she joined with her husband in this deed, this was probably her property). "1778. Died John Malby, East Guilford, Sept. 17, 1778." 1790. "First Census of the United States." "Jane Maltby, Guilford and New Haven, 2 females and 2 slaves." 1794. "With consent of her conservator Levi Ward, Jane Maltby sells land in Guilford which belonged to David Smith." "1796 (Talcott MS., New Haven Hist. Society) Died (it looked like "Vise," it may have been "Wife") --- Maltby, East Guilford, aged 80, Oct. 20, 1796." (There is a Guilford Rec. as follows) "1871. Ruth Malby, died aged 78, Nov. 20, 1871" (hence b. 1793) The old Chest, which belonged to John Maltby, b. 1698, is reproduced on p. 269, "Maltby-Maltbie Family". The Chest is marked "I. M."

As John (2) father of John, was a "Cooper" he may have built this chest. His will was dated March 11, 1727, and proved Sept. 12, 1727. This seachest belonged in 1867 to Dr. Charles Benjamin Maltbie, father of Seraph (Maltbie) Dean, who later owned it. In his letter of 1867, Dr. Maltbie points out that in olden times "I" and "J" were interchangeable. The chest was willed to Dr. Maltbie by Abraham Hodgkin, who descended from Hannah Maltbie, sister of John (3).
