Maltby Genealogy

American Lineage

VIII.3544. Clayton Lester Maltby, b. Mar. 9, 1851 (William ------) He was of Kansas City. Mar. in 1884. No children. He lived at one time in Colorado and Dakota. Retired capitalist (loaned money and dealt in real estate). Res. 736 Minnesota Avenue.

Note. The date of his marriage (1884) is that of the year when with my parents I went to California. In the same railway car with us, a young man got on, either just before, or just after, we left Kansas City. He sat one seat forward and opposite to mine and I could not take my eyes off him--he looked so like my father who sat one seat ahead of me. He was dressed in black which looked somber, and beneath his trousers were high black boots. Those days travel was not what it is now, just where we were shortly due to pass the train before us had been held up and passengers robbed. The "darkie" porter who was a great friend of mine, stopped and told me not to be nervous. "See that young man over there--well, he's got a six-shooter in each one of those high boots." Later he told my father that the young man (and I think, his brother) were "gentleman gamblers"--they gambled but they were absolutely "straight".

In 1953, F. A. Molby sent me the following: "Here is a note extra-ordinary, a clipping from a Kansas City paper of 30 or more years ago."

"Mrs. Linda Maltby, wife of Clayton L. Maltby, a wealthy retired gambler, 736 Minnesota Avenue, Kansas side (of the state line) was sued for $50,000 in the Wyandotte County District Court yesterday by Mrs. Bertha Rogers of Chicago, Ill., who alleges that the defendant alienated the affections of her husband....Mr. Rogers separated from his wife, Oct. 16, 1917...The suit yesterday is the 2nd by Mrs. Rogers against Mrs. Maltby...Mrs. Rogers formerly collected $500 on a verdict of breach of contract March, 1917...Mrs. Maltby is an elderly woman and gray haired. She lives with her husband on the Kansas side (of state line)."

"Whee! I have a grand-niece named Linda Sue Molby, now about seven, whose family live in Kansas City on the east side of the state line. Shall I send the clipping to her? That is all I know about Clayton L. Maltby."
