"which institution he was graduated with honors in 1876. From the time of his graduation until a brief period of time before his decease, he was actively engaged as an instructor in various institutions. Almost the only variation was in 1878 when he was appointed as Engineer on the survey of the boundary line between Guatemala, and Mexico.

Mr. Maltby first became identified with the State Normal School system of Pennsylvania in 1884, when he was chosen Prof. on Natural Sciences in the State Normal School at Indiana.

After five years service he resigned to take charge of the train- ing department of the School at Millersville. In 1890 he became Prin- cipal of the State Normal School at Slippery Rock, Penn.....The personal influence of Dr. Maltby over the student body was remarkable. He could be stern when sternness was required; but the great background of his influence was his broad sympathy, which seemed to be always going out toward his students, and his unquenchable enthusiasm for his work--an enthusiasm which seemed to beget enthusiasm in those coming under his touch. His was a strong personality which continually impressed itself upon others--not in a self-assertive way, but through the unconscious going out to others of the things which he himself felt and of the visions which were the inspirations of his own life.

.....Dr. Maltby was a man of exuberant spirit, great physical and mental energy and of indomitable faith in the accomplishment of the things which he set out to do. He was a man of wide culture, his activities led him into the field of authorship, writing books dealing with education and civil affairs. He was a patriotic citizen; active in furthering the interests of his community, his State and the Nation; a sincere and earnest Christian.

On Dec. 26, 1882, he married Harriet Dazell of Canton, N.Y. who became a most efficient helper and constant inspiration.

In recognition of his culture and ability the degree of Ph.D. was conferred upon him by St. Lawrence University of New York and the degree of LL.D. by Grove City College.
