"illness of two weeks. Until his illness he had appeared to be in the best of health and was about his duties at the company place of business in West Bridge street, taking an active part in its administration, and continued his life-long activities in organizations in which he had so long been interested. Until Tuesday night he was able to be up and about his home, and hope was entertained by physicians and members of his family that he would soon be able to leave the house. The end came suddenly but not unexpectedly.

Mr. Maltby was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Maltby and was born in Pulaski January 9, 1848, and having attended Pulaski village schools, came to Oswego when 20 years old and had since been a resident of Oswego. He was an engraver by profession and became through his art and skill, which he practiced up to a few months ago, one of the best known men in the state in this line of activity. For many years he was with Jules Wendell and Son and on the dissolution of that establishment, formed the Grossen-Maltby Company, which later became Maltby-Campbell Co., Inc., which he headed until his death.

He was of social disposition, enjoying meeting and being with his friends, and out in company and was affable, courteous and retained always a keen interest in public affairs. In every organization in which he was connected he maintained an increasing interest......for a number of years he was superintendent of the Sunday School. He was also the teacher of a young women's Bible class......He was a construc- tive public critic, in matters concerned with city administrative problems, and always an interesting companion.

He retained the spirit youth and was interested in young people and their welfare and was a man who will be widely missed in Oswego.... Interment in the family plot in Riverside cemetery....The bearers were Harry J. Burgess, John Lockett, Fred House, Fred Pryor, Arthur Scriber, and J. Edward Campbell.

In 1911 I received a New Year greeting card from Mr. U. Z. Maltby. The Maltby coat-of-arms, handsomely embossed in gold and Mr. U.Z.Maltby's name beneath, sends kind remembrances and best wishes for your happiness during the coming year. 1911."--beautifully engraved. Oswego, New York.

Later Mr. Maltby sent a photograph of his residence at 73 Mohawk St., Oswego. A large comfortable, roomy house with bay windows on lower and upper floor, while on the top floor there was a porch.
