VIII.3362. Lieut. Lawrence Rumsey, b. Sept. 2, 1885 (Jennie Cary 7, Julia Love 6, Maria 5, Isaac 4, Benj.3, Dan.2, Wm.1). Soon after the outbreak of the War in 1914, he went to France and joined the Lafayette Esquadrile, serving in the Air Force throughout the war.

(Letter from Elizabeth M.L. Cary, Aug. 6, 1918)

"I send Sergt. Lawrence Rumsey's photograph, standing by his "Nienport"--all of the Lafayette Esquadrille had to make distinguishing marks on their planes, so Lawrence put "Rum."

I thought I told you he came home after 5 months in Hospital in Neiully" (suburb of Paris) "trying to stop the boils, 2 months flat in bed. When he got out the boils returned, and the Hospital near Napole- on's Tomb, in Paris, (for skin maladies) cured him with his own serum. A few small boils came after arriving home. He was later transferred to the U.S. Aviation, as Lieut. He tried 'waiting for orders,' resigned and enlisted as a private in the Regular Army U.S.A., to work up.

Imagine him learning the first of military drill on the same field where officers were playing Polo! and he an expert at Polo! He said it was hard to keep to attention on drill orders. He is still in U.S. (I suppose to help in Mexico if necessary). In the photo, you see the French scene and the canon above Laurie's head. He worked the plane with his feet and hands, directing the aim of the canon by tipping and turning the plane.

He has been changed from a Southern camp to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He says a Ladies Tea cannot equal the gossip of a Camp. Now at Fort Sill they say they are going to Siberia sure!"
