The Western Union Telegraph Company is entering upon its twenty- fifth years of service in this city. Today under the supervision of Edwin W. Wade, of 39 Henry Street, who opened the first separate Western Union office in the Peoples Bank Building, new quarters were opened at the corner of Howe Avenue and Prospect Street.
Manager 20 Years.
Mr. Wade has been with the company thirty-one years. He opened the Passaic office in December, 1899, and has been manager of the office twenty years.
The new office was secured after hard work upon his part, and upon the part of E. F. Griffith, superintendent of the whole of the Northern New Jersey District of Western Union. Mr. Griffith's aid was easily enlisted for he resides at 191 Lexington Avenue, this city.
Mr. Wade has a messenger roster that he prized highly. Included in the list are several Passaic policemen and fire men.
Mr. Wade's Career.
Edwin Wilson Wade, for that's how he was baptized, was born in Addison, N.Y., on January 22, 1875. He left the Addison High School in May, 1891, to go to work for Western Union.
The first W. U. office in Passaic was opened by Mr. Wade in the People's Bank Building in December, 1899, previous to that time tele- grams were handled by the late William H. Hornback in the Erie Railroad Company office. In 1909 the office was moved to the old National Bank building; in 1919 around the corner to Bloomfield Avenue, and when the buildings there were razed to permit the erection of the new Passaic National Bank and Trust Company building, Mr. Wade was forced to move to 647 1/2 Main Avenue.
The office force today consists of Mr. Wade, who is a member of the old time Telegraphers' Association, Passaic Elks, Knights of Colum- bus and Rotary Club, three operators, a cashier, four clerks and five messenger boys."
VIII.2973. Clara Elizabeth McGeer, b. Sept. 29, 1871 (Airetta Wilson 7, Margaret 6, Zach.5, Dan.4, Dan.3, Dan.2, Wm.1). Miss McGeer furnished a large part of the records of the descendants of Zacheus (5) Maltby, also the photographs of him, his wife, Reunah Burchard, and their child- ren, Daniel, Ezra, Margaret, and Mercy. The pictures of the Zacheus (5) Maltbie heirlooms were from her. At one time a member of the M.A., she organized a Family Reunion at the old Zacheus Maltbie home one summer at which some 20 or 30 descendants were present--it was in the form of a picnic. When last heard from she was not married and resided at Auburn, N.Y. An interesting snap-shot was taken at Summer Hill, N.Y., of eleven descendants of Zacheus (5) Maltby, they are like steps, on a long ladder in front of the old barn.
