Col. of 12th N.Y. Infantry and took part in engagements in the Veriun sector and in the Battle of the Argonne, France. Received the Dis- tinguished Service Medal and the New York State Conspicuous Service Medal. His last letter was from the Army and Navy Club, Washington, D.C., having shortly before returned from the Continent.

Reginald Love Foster commenced writing my mother in 1895, and, by letter, the two families were frequently in communication until about 1935.
Before me is a very old newspaper picture--and, although I have given Reginald Foster of Yale, I believe he was a Harvard man. The middle initial is wrong but I have just received a newspaper picture where a Maltby is given a different initial under his picture from that in the text.

"Captain Reginald C. Foster, Harvard, and Kilpatric of Yale, are shown as they boarded the steamer "Vaderland" to direct their respec- tive teams when they enter the meets against the teams of Oxford and Cambridge. Foster will only direct his men as he was disabled some days ago. Both the captains have reputations, not only for athletics, but for the direction of men."

"Max Foster is doing wonders in France in the Y.M.C.A. He says 'our kids are wonderful!', and so are his letters to his wife. Of his visit to the front, he has written for a magazine."...."Poor Reg. (Reginald Love Foster) "is most impatiently waiting in Spartanburg, South Carolina".....
"Max" Foster was an author. I first met him in Portland, Oregon, in 1910. Later Mr. and Mrs. Foster entertained me at luncheon at the Hotel Vancouver. A few years later, Max and his wife with "Betty" dined with my mother and family at her Boulevard residence in North Vancouver.
VII.2042. Theodore Augustus Maltby, b. Mar. 19, 1847, New Haven, Ct. (George W.6, Augustus 5, Stephen 4, Benj.3, Dan.2, Wm.1). Mar. Apr. 30, 1872, Emma D. Clark, dau. of Bryan Clark of New Haven. Entered the Civil War before he was 18; was stationed along the Potomac River as a sharpshooter. He was an unusually fine marksman. He was a merchant. Died about 1921. His wife d. 1932. She had crossed to Holland and Germany several times to visit her eldest daughter. (Photos. of both owned by the compiler.)
