Mr. Earl Chapin May in his "Century of Silver," p. 132, under
"Bicycling Ambassador" gives a chapter to an account of Wilburt
Stevens Maltby. It is with permission of Mr. May and his publishers
(see under Fred, Evarts and Maltby Stevens) that some notes are
herein included.
The most amusing incident is of Wilburt at a tender age "swapping" his brother, Douglas, not yet four years old, for a calf owned by his grandfather Julius (5) Maltby. However, he very shortly returned the calf and collected Douglas! The chapter is intensely interesting, giving a picture of the family's home-life in Northford, from which, in 1878, they moved to Shelton, where we occassionally called on them. Here again Wilburt "swapped" a gold watch, gift from Grandfather Julius for a new high-wheel bicycle. This was the start of his world-wide reputation and title of "Champion Bicycle rider." This hobby of his turned into a profession, during which he visited Australia, via Hawaii; then on to India; and by way of the Suez Canal, the Mediterr- anean, Paris and Great Britain. His tour began in 1886, when he left San Francisco, and terminated in February of 1888, on his arrival in New York City. (See "A Century of Silver")

It must have been shortly after his marriage when I first met Arthur Ives Maltby, they were then living at Shelton, Conn., across the river from Derby; and we went one afternoon, while visiting in Derby, to call. Again in 1910, enroute to Vancouver, we spent a night in Seattle and Mrs. Maltby with Winona came to see us--a de- lightful visit.

VII.1881. Wilburt Stevens Maltby, b. Nov. 3, 1866 (Epaphrus C.6, Julius 5, Benj.4, Dan.3, Dan.2, Wm.1). Mar. May 12, 1897, Sophie Louise Maltby, dau. of Charles Robinson Maltby, of Corning, N.Y. and great grand-dau. of Curtis W. Maltby, son of Erastus Maltby who was a native of Caanan, Ct. Mr. Maltby was Secretary of C.R. Maltby Co., Coffees and Teas, 91 Wall Street, N.Y., with residence at 1208 Put- nam Ave., Plainfield, N.J. He attended the Maltby Family Reunion at Branford, Conn., and provided lapel pins of red on which, in gold, were the Maltby coat-at-arms. In his youth he was a champion bicycle rider. I recall as a child, my father taking us to the old Hamilton Park, on Whalley Ave., New Haven, to see him ride. Mounted on one of the then, fabulously tall front wheel, with a small one in the rear, he performed marvelous exhibits of "trick" riding.
