From an item in my diary:--
"We talked of the Maltby family, of the scenes she had visited, of the famous people she had met, and the great respect shown her in foreign countries.
She spoke of the great advancement in the relations of men and women, especially in Germany." When Miss Maltby entered "Gottengen," she was the first woman student, I believe she said in Germany, to attend a university. I think this was also the case when she was in Berlin.
On this trip she revisited her old German Professor and found the enormous classroom filled with students of both sexes--the atmos- phere between them, much as at any American university.
She spoke of her recognition in Japan, the discussions where her opinion was asked--in a country where women have only recently had such privilege. Her visits to hospitals, the finding of native nur- ses, trained in the States.
The talk wandered to lovely antiques she had picked up, here and there on the travels. Then back to her old days at Oxford (England), for Miss Maltby was left, many years ago, by her dearest girl friend, her small son, to be his guardian.
She took "Philip" to Oxford, and her happiest recollections seemed to be for the holidays, when with tea basket, they got a boat and spent the day picnicking on the river.
A delightful conversationalist, and an intelligent listener; broad of mind and keenly interested in current events. The evening closed all too soon, with her train leaving for Banff, etc.--then home to Ohio, and back to New York."
At one time Miss Maltby was the only woman professor at Bar- nard. She never married).
