Wilkes in exploring expedition to find the Antarctic Continent, 1838. Lieut. Eld was the first to discover it at 10 A.M., Jan. 10, 1839, he called out from the crosstrees of U.S. sloop of War, "Peacock"-- "Land!" Capt. Wilkes named the highest mountain top "Eld's Peak." (Ref. Tuttle Fam. Gen., p. 206).
