He spent some time in farming, the family habit. At Wetmore, Custer Co., Colo., in Hardscrable Park, he had a ranch of some size with a log cabin for home to start, and later a farm house. He operated week days, while he preached on Sundays. He raised corn, wheat, oats, and some cattle and the new alfalfa.
Returning to Conn. in 1889 he had pastorates in New Hartford, 89-90; South Windsor, 90-95; and Suffield, 95-1903. In Suffield he served for 8 years the First Church on Zion's Hill, one of the earli- est churches of this denomination in Conn. In 1903 he left Conn. in poor health and went to California to hold temporary pastorates but soon was obliged to give up pastoral duties and retired to private life at Pomona and later in Yucaipa, growing fruit.
Rachel Jewett Keyes was the youngest daughter in a family of 3 boys and 4 girls, children of Joseph Keyes, son of Seth Keyes and Eunice Jewett of Pownal, Vt. They mar. there Oct. 26, 1820, and later removed to Bennington, where Rachel was born, July 19, 1844. She d. at Los Angeles, Feb. 11, 1920. Harvey and Rachel Linsley are buried in the beautiful Inglewood Cemetery at Los Angeles.
This marriage brings into the Linsley record another long line of English ancestors. The Keyes line is believed to have come from Scotland in the early history of our country. Eunice Jewett was dau. of Erastus Jewett and Rachel Morgan, dau. of Benjamin Morgan of Pownal, Vt.; b, Apr. 25, 1779; d. Aug. 6, 1859. Seth Keyes mar. Est- her Morgan, dau. of Joseph, who d. 1785, ae. 37, having, as records state, "Litterally given his life in the service of his Country." He served 7 years in the Rev. Army. (Ref. Morgan Gen.)
Rachel Morgan, dau. of Benjamin of Pownal, Vt., b. Apr. 25, 1779, d. Aug. 6, 1859. She was grand daughter of Lieut. Thomas Jewett and Eunice Slafter, all of early Conn. stock.
Thomas Jewett was b. in Norwish, Conn., a direct descendant of Edward Jewett of Bradford, England.
_”Edward Jewett was b. in Bradford, West Riding, Yorkshire, Eng. 1580; mar. Oct. 1, 1604, Mary Taylor, dau. of William Taylor. Joseph Jewett, their son, was b. in the same town, Dec. 31, 1609; mar. Mary Mallinson, Oct. 1, 1634, and came to America, 1639, in ship "John." Settled at Rawley, Mass. Their son, Jeremiah m. 1661, Sarah Dickin- son. Their son Eleazer was b. 1673; removed to Norwich, Conn., where he mar. (1) Sarah Lamb, and (2) Mary (Griswold) Tracey. The son, Eleazer, by 1st wife, b. 1704, mar. Elizabeth Griggs.
Writing of Lieut. Thomas Jewett, Major R. K. Linsley states: "He was Justice and Judge, etc., and Lieut. in the militia and saw service several times during the Rev. He was active in the battle of Bennington and when the powder ran low he seized a kettle and dipper, passed down the line dipping it out himself. It is recorded he found a British officer dying, did what he could to make the man more comfortable, and then took the officer's sword, later to learn that the officer was Col. Baun, the Commander."
Eunice Slafter descended from John Slafter, tradition says from Wales. His son Samuel, b. 1696 mar. Dorothy Fenton of Mansfield, Conn.
