Bryan.
Richard Bryan, b. in Eng. mar. (1) Mary Pentry, dau. of William and Margaret Pentry, of Hartford. He was a prosperous merchant and had extensive holdings not only in Milford and New Haven, but in Elizabeth- town, N. J., and Providance, R. I., and elsewhere. He was appointed Commissoner (or Justice of Peace) for Milford, 1689. His first child, Mary Bryan, was b. Feb. 15, 1649/50, bapt. with her brother, Alexander Bryan, 1 May 1654; she d. between 1708 and 1718. She mar. (1) 28 Feb. 1666, John Maltby, who was lost at sea, in 1676. Mar. (2) Rev. Joseph Taylor of Southampton, L. I., who d. 4 April 1682. Mar. (3) 30 Jan. 1690, John Howell, Jr. (q.v.) of Southampton, who d. 8 Mar. 1692.
Children by John Maltby. John (2) b. 1 June 1673; d. 27 June 1706; mar. Susanna Clark and had:
Mary (3) b. about 1698, and Sarah, b. 1705; d. unmar. Mary (2) twin, mar. Major Joseph Fordham.
Note. The above calls John Howell "Jr.". Ralph D. Smith of Guil- ford, Ct., called him, "Jr. son of Mr. Edward Howell of Southampton, one of the principal men of the town."
Of the 2nd husband of Mary (Bryan) Maltby, Ralph Smith wrote:
"Rev. Joseph Taylor, Pastor of Church at Southampton, was a man of great worth. He was s. of Mr. John Taylor of Cambridge, Mass., b. 1651, grad. Harvard Coll. 1667; d. April 4, 1682. They had a son, Joseph Taylor."

Second Generation
II.2. John (2) Maltby, b. June 1, 1673, at New Haven, Conn., (son of John (1)).
In 1698 we find him living at Southampton, Long Island, Suffolk Co., N.Y., and in a deed recorded at New Haven he is called "trader and joyner."
"Early Hist. of Southampton, L.I.," by George Rogers Howell, M.A., states; "John Maltby, formerly of Connecticut, was a tax payer in 1694. He married Susannah Clark. He died June 27, 1706, aged 33, at Southampton, where his tombstone is still standing. His will was offered for sale by C.V. Edgar, to a Maltby, but both Mr. Maltby and I thought the price too high. The will is "John Maltbie, of Southampton, Suffolk Co., New York. Dated June 24, 1706."
"The will of John Maltbie of Southampton, Suffolk Co., New York, dated "26, June 1706. Proved 10th Aug. 1706." He leaves estate to "daughters Mary and Sarah and to his wife.
