"Josiah Maltby was born in 1779, in Connecticut. Mary McArthur was born in 1783, in New Hampshire. They were married in Orange County, Vermont. Moved to Oneida and Tioga Counties, New York, and came to Saugamon Co., Ill. in 1822, on Spring Creek. Their daughter, Sarah, mar. Sylvanus Massie in Kentucky, b. Sept.12, 1799. Mrs. Mary Maltby died in 1827 and Josiah Maltby died Jan. 1841. She in Saugamon and he in Brown Co., Ill."
Mary McArthur was a twin of John McArthur, and, according to a letter from Miss Henrietta F. Dwight, a descendant of Sally (Maltby) Masssie, they were born "Jan. 10, 1781."
Mary McArthur was dau. of John McArthur, who came from the parish of Fontingal, Glen Szeu(?) Perthshire, Scotland, in 1772. He was born in 1742 and married Margaret Aiken of Chester, New Hamp- shire, who was born 1759, and settled in Thornton, New Hampshire. Margaret Aiken had brothers and sisters, Andrew, William, Margaret, Samuel, James, John, Mary, Mary."
"The family" (McArthur) "moved to Chelsea, Vt., about 1802 and Mary mar. Josiah Maltby, soon afterwards, at Vershire, Vt. They lived in Vershire for a while, afterwards went out West at the time others went, among whom, was his brother Isaac. They went to Spring- field, Illinois." ,pre> (Old McArthur Family Bilble) "Born. Jan. 10, 1781, Mary." "Mr. Maltby died in Illinois, Aug. 18, 1827." Note. I have found Maltbys who gave their ancestor as "John Maltby son of Josiah Maltby of Springfield, Illinois." I think there is no doubt but what the above Josiah is their ancestor. Consequently I give two children (at least) for Josiah.
