Maltby Genealogy

American Lineage

"William died at Middletown John in New Haven. Benjamin calls here when he goes to see his friends. Mrs. Williams of Northford is his sister.) "Uncle Samuel joined the Church before I came to Northford, 3 or 4 years before I should think. Charles Foote was four years old when I came to Northford." Ruth Collins, dau. of Daniel and Eunice Rosseter from North Guilford." (Note. These accounts of "Aunt Ruth" and "Aunt Foote" were on notes collected by Mrs. Cushman, a descendant of Samuel Maltby. They were difficult to decipher and also--in some cases, not easy to dis- tinguish the generation of the person referred to. They are in- cluded, as best may be, as furnishing a clearer picture of our fore- bears than could be obtained from statistics alone.) IV.116. James Maltby, b. May 30, 1749 (Sam.3, Sam.2, Wm.1). He mar. Sarah Coe, dau. of Simeon and Anna (Morris) Coe of Durham. She was sister of Roxanna, who mar. James' brother Samuel. They were mar. March 8, 1786 by Oliver Stanley, Jus. Peace. (Northford Church Record. p. 13) "1786. Oct. 1. Sarah, wife of James Maltbie, admitted from the Church in Durham." "James Maltbie d. Feb. 11, 1820, aged 71 of Rheumatism." "Sarah Maltbie died Dec. 15, 1812, aged 56." (hence b. 1756) (The First Census of the United States, 1790) "James Maltby of Branford. 1 male over 16 1 male under 16 3 females. Note. "1 male over 16" - himself. "1 male under 16" - son James, b. 1789. "3 females" - his wife, dau. Sarah, b. 1787, and dau. Eunice b. 1788. This is the only "James Maltby" in the Genealogy, up to this date, and the only possible James of the Census. Here again we have the awkward note calling him "of Branford." So many of the Maltbys who lived all their lives at Northford are recorded as "of Branford," or "of Northford in Branford." Children of James Maltby and Sarah Coe. V.375. Sarah Maltby, b. May 15, 1787. (Branford Rec.) V.376. Eunice " b. Apr. 18, 1788; died unmarried. V.377. James " b. July 18, 1789; of Wallingford. V.378. William " b. Oct. 4, 1796; d. Oct. 24, 1820, unmarried. Typhus fever. V.379. "Anna " bp. Oct. 13, 1793; d. Sept. 10, 1795, aged 3." (Northford Church Record.) V.380. Henry " b. Mch. 29, 1799. IV.117. Jonathan Maltby, b. Oct. 21, 1751, at Branford (Sam.3, Sam.2, Wm.1). His father, Samuel (3), died Dec. 1, 1771, when Jonathan was 20 years of age. In Samuel's will, dated "Feb. 19, 1767,"
